Children's Dental Procedures Under Sedation

From a single filling to several cavities in one sitting, sedation lets us complete your child's treatment comfortably and efficiently — often turning what would be multiple stressful visits into one calm appointment.

One Comfortable Visit Instead of Many Hard Ones

When a child needs dental work, the treatment itself is often the easy part — getting a frightened or very young child to sit still long enough is the real challenge. Sedation solves that. By helping your child relax or sleep through the procedure, we can work efficiently and safely, and frequently complete in one appointment what would otherwise require several.

For families, that means fewer days off school and work, fewer co-pays, fewer recovery periods, and — most importantly — far less stress for your child. A child who has a calm, complete experience is far more likely to grow into someone who keeps their checkups without dread.

Procedures We Commonly Do With Sedation

Fillings

Treating cavities comfortably, even for kids who can't sit through it awake or who have several teeth to address.

Multiple Cavities at Once

When several teeth need work, sedation lets us complete everything in a single, efficient visit.

Tooth Extractions

Removing a badly decayed or problem baby tooth gently, with comfort and calm throughout.

Pulpotomy ("Baby Root Canal")

Saving a decayed baby tooth by treating the inner pulp — far easier for an anxious child under sedation.

Crowns

Restoring teeth that are too damaged for a simple filling, completed comfortably in one sitting.

Deep Cleanings & Exams

For children whose anxiety or gag reflex makes even routine care difficult, sedation makes it possible.

The right sedation level depends on your child and the procedure. A simple filling for a mildly nervous child might just need laughing gas, while extensive work for a very young or fearful child may call for deeper sedation or general anesthesia. We'll recommend the gentlest option that gets the job done safely.

How We Decide

How much work is needed. A single filling is very different from six cavities plus an extraction. The more extensive the treatment, the more a deeper level of sedation may help your child get through it in one visit.

Your child's age and temperament. Toddlers and highly anxious children often need more than laughing gas to stay comfortable, while an older, cooperative child may do beautifully with the mildest option.

Health history. We always review medical history, medications, and allergies before choosing a sedation plan, following AAPD and American Academy of Pediatrics protocols and using weight-based dosing.

Your input. You know your child. We factor in what you tell us about past visits and what helps your child feel safe, and we explain the options in plain language so you can decide with confidence.

Watched Over Every Moment

No matter the procedure, your child's safety comes first. We complete a full health review beforehand, monitor oxygen and heart rate continuously, and keep a trained team member with your child the entire time. Local numbing is always used alongside sedation so your child feels no pain, and emergency equipment is on hand as a standard precaution.

We never begin until your child is settled, and we stop the moment a break is needed. You'll leave with clear, written aftercare instructions and a number to call with any questions — details you'll also find in our parent's guide.
