Pediatric Sedation Dentistry for Children Across Delaware

Gentle, judgment-free dental care for kids who are young, anxious, sensitive, or simply not ready to sit still. From laughing gas to full general anesthesia, we match every child to the calmest, safest option for their needs — serving families from Wilmington to Dover and the Sussex County beaches.

When a Regular Dental Visit Just Isn't Working

If your child cries, clings, gags, melts down, or simply can't stay still long enough for the dentist to finish, you are not failing as a parent — and your child is not "bad." Some kids need a little more help to get through dental care, and that is exactly what pediatric sedation is for.

Many parents arrive feeling defeated. Maybe a previous visit ended in tears before anything got done. Maybe your child has so many cavities that the thought of multiple appointments feels impossible. Maybe your child has autism, ADHD, or sensory sensitivities that make the lights, sounds, and sensations of a dental office overwhelming. Whatever brought you here, we see children like yours every week, and we treat them with patience, never with pressure or shame.

Sedation dentistry uses safe, well-tested medication to help a child relax or sleep through treatment that they could not otherwise tolerate. It is not a shortcut and it is not a last resort — for the right child, it is the kindest, safest way to get necessary care done while protecting their long-term relationship with the dentist. A calm visit today is how a fearful child becomes a confident teenager who actually keeps their checkups.

Before recommending anything, we review your child's complete medical history, current medications, and behavior. A trained clinician watches over your child the entire time, and we never begin until both you and your child are ready.

Four Levels of Sedation, Matched to Your Child

Children are not small adults. We choose the lightest level of sedation that will let your child get the care they need comfortably, and we explain every option in plain language before you decide.

Level 1: Mild

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Gentle relaxation that wears off in minutes

A sweet-smelling gas breathed through a small nose mask. Within minutes your child feels calm, floaty, and a little giggly — but stays fully awake and able to respond. The effects clear within minutes of the mask coming off, so most kids head right back to school or daycare.

  • Safe for children ages 3 and older
  • No needles, no grogginess afterward
  • Great for cleanings, fillings, and first visits
  • Your child stays awake and aware

Best for: Mild nervousness, wiggly young kids, sensitive gag reflex, routine treatment.

Level 3: Deep

IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry)

The closest thing to sleeping through it

Medication delivered through a tiny IV places your child in a deep, sleep-like state with little to no memory afterward. Numbing cream is applied first so placing the line is barely noticeable. Oxygen and heart rate are monitored every second.

  • Deep, sleep-like comfort
  • Dose adjusted continuously and precisely
  • Ideal for longer or more involved treatment
  • Little to no memory of the procedure

Best for: Significant anxiety, extensive treatment in one visit, kids who can't tolerate lighter options.

Level 4: Full

General Anesthesia (Fully Asleep)

Completely asleep, like a hospital procedure

The only level where your child is fully unconscious, administered and monitored by a qualified anesthesia provider. It allows all needed dental work to be completed safely in one session for children who cannot be treated any other way.

  • Complete sleep, no awareness or memory
  • All treatment finished in a single session
  • Comprehensive pre-operative evaluation required
  • Managed by a dedicated anesthesia provider

Best for: Very young children needing extensive work, severe special needs, extreme phobia.

Children Who Benefit Most From Sedation

Sedation isn't only for the most fearful kids. If any of these sound like your child, it's worth a conversation.

Anxious or Fearful Children

Kids who cry, freeze, or refuse to open up — often after a scary past visit. Sedation removes the fear so they can get care without trauma.

Special Needs Children

Children with autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, or sensory processing differences who find the dental environment overwhelming.

Very Young Children

Toddlers and preschoolers who simply can't understand or cooperate with treatment yet, especially when several teeth need attention.

Lots of Cavities at Once

When a child has several cavities, sedation lets us complete the work in one comfortable visit instead of many stressful ones.

Strong Gag Reflex

A sensitive gag reflex can make X-rays, impressions, and back-teeth treatment miserable. Sedation relaxes that response.

A Bad Past Experience

One frightening visit can create lasting fear. A calm, sedated visit helps rebuild trust and resets the relationship with the dentist.

How We Keep Your Child Safe

Pediatric sedation is held to rigorous standards. Here is what protects your child at every visit.

Full Health Review First

Before we recommend anything, we review your child's medical history, medications, allergies, and weight so the plan is the safest possible fit.

Continuous Monitoring

A small sensor tracks your child's oxygen and heart rate throughout. A trained team member watches over them the entire time.

Weight-Based Dosing

Every medication dose is calculated for your child's specific size, following AAPD and American Academy of Pediatrics protocols.

Prepared for Anything

We keep emergency medications, oxygen, and an AED on hand, and our team runs regular drills so everything is ready if it's ever needed.

Clear Instructions

You'll get exact guidance on fasting, what to bring, and aftercare — plus a number to call if anything feels off at home.

No Pressure, Ever

We never start until your child is settled, and we stop the moment they need a break. You stay informed and in control throughout.

Your Child's Visit, Step by Step

No surprises — for you or your child. Here is how a sedation visit unfolds from start to finish.

1. Consultation. We meet your child, review their health history and behavior, and talk through which sedation level fits best. You'll leave knowing the plan, the cost estimate, and exactly how to prepare.

2. Preparation. You'll receive simple written instructions, including any fasting (empty-stomach) rules for deeper sedation, what your child can wear, and what comfort item to bring. For oral or IV sedation, your child will need a calm ride home.

3. Day of the visit. We greet your child warmly and take time to help them settle in. Depending on the sedation level, you may stay close during the calming phase. We don't begin until your child is comfortable, and we monitor them continuously.

4. Treatment. With your child relaxed, our dentists work efficiently — often finishing in one visit what would otherwise take several. Your child is safe and watched over the entire time.

5. Recovery and aftercare. Laughing gas wears off in minutes. With oral or IV sedation, your child rests with you until they're ready to leave, and you'll go home with clear aftercare instructions and our phone number.

Parents Ask Us

At what age can my child have sedation?

We offer laughing gas for children ages 3 and up. Deeper options — oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia — are considered case by case based on your child's age, weight, health, and the treatment needed. We'll talk it all through before recommending anything.

Is sedation safe for children?

When provided by trained clinicians with proper monitoring, sedation is a well-established part of pediatric dentistry. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide/oxygen as a safe, effective technique for children, and deeper sedation follows AAPD and American Academy of Pediatrics monitoring protocols. Every child gets a full medical review first and is monitored the entire visit.

Will my child be knocked out?

Usually not. Laughing gas and oral sedation keep your child awake but relaxed. IV sedation produces a deep, sleep-like state. Only general anesthesia makes a child fully asleep, and it's reserved for specific situations.

Can I be with my child?

In most cases a parent can be present during the calming, pre-treatment portion of the visit. We'll explain exactly what to expect for your child's sedation level at the consultation.
